What’s the Wivenhoe Society all about?
The Wivenhoe Society aims to ensure the town remains a pleasant place in which to live and work. For example, we monitor planning applications and, when appropriate, lodge our observations with the planning authority. Our voice is heard, but perhaps not listened to as often as we should like!
We organise a variety of social and cultural events, some of which perform the secondary role of raising money for local good causes, but we also roll up our sleeves from time to time and tidy up grotty areas, such as the wasteland between the start of the Wivenhoe Trail and the railway embankment, which we weeded, cleared of rubbish and planted with shrubs in 2006 and have since maintained. And of course we organise two major litter-picks each year along the riverbank.
In addition, members get the Society’s quarterly Newsletter delivered to their door, with articles of interest, updates on the work of the Society, local developments, fundraising reports and details of forthcoming events.
The committee is too small at present, and we would like a few more members to take a more active part, either by joining the committee or by helping out with events, such as running our stall for a couple of hours at Art on the Railings. We really need someone with a specific interest in planning matters who could keep a special eye on local developments.
